About 50 miles northeast of Atlanta, in Barrow County, helicopter footage from WSB-TV revealed hundreds of law enforcement and emergency vehicles encircling Apalachee High School.

According to a statement released by the county sheriff's office, there had been reported casualties and "one suspect is in custody" when police and fire officials arrived at the school in the middle of the morning "in reference to a reported active shooting."

Two fatalities and four injuries were reported in the media, but more information and confirmation were needed.

Joe Biden was made aware of the situation as it was happening, according to a White House statement.
